| abstractText | Full text of MNL contribution: New Mutation: pad: paddle. "Paddle" (provisional gene symbol, pad), a new recessive mutation, has arisen in the colony of the late Dr. John Gowen, the colony now being maintained in the Department of Microbiology. Homozygotes show an extreme shortening of the extremities and, if not stillborn, die within a few hours after birth. In matings of known heterozygotes, out of 1,131 progeny 192 (17%) were classified as pad. Effects of the pad gene resemble in many ways effects produced by the phocomelic (pc) gene. In addition to the shortening of extremities, other similar effects include a smaller head with a reduced lower jaw, a large median cleft palate, and an intestine less than 50% the length of the normal intestine. In constrast to phocomelic mice, paddle mice have numerous abnormalities in the ribs and vertebral column. Allelism tests have not been made. |
