Description: The anoctamin/TMEM16 family members include Ano1-10 (TMEM16A-J). They are membrane proteins involved in a variety of physiological functions, such as ion transport and ion channel regulation. TMEM16A and 16B are Ca(2+)-dependent Cl(-) channels; TMEM16C, 16D, 16F, 16G, and 16J have been classified as Ca(2+)-dependent lipid scramblases []. The anoctamin/TMEM16 family might have diverged in two or three different subclasses, channels, scramblases and dual-function channel/scramblases [].This entry represents anoctamin-8 (Ano8, TMEM16H). There is no evidence of calcium-activated chloride channel (CaCC) activity for Ano8. It has been suggested that Ano8 has an intracellular rather than plasma membrane function due to its poor membrane expression [].
