Homeobox protein aristaless-like 3 (ALX3) is a paired class aristaless-like homeoprotein expressed during embryonic development []. ALX3 plays a role in neural tube closure [].The Alx family is implicated in craniofacial development. In mice, ALX1/3/4 are expressed in cephalic mesenchyme at early stages of mouse development, and mutations in each Alx gene show similar craniofacial phenotypes including defects of the facial bones [].
