Pinin (also known as memA and nuclear protein SDK3) is localised at the desmosomes and is implicated in anchoring intermediate filaments to the desmosomal plaque []. It is also a transcriptional activator, binding to the the E-box 1 core sequence of the E-cadherin promoter gene []. Pinin is also found in nuclear 'speckles' where it is also an auxiliary component of the splicing-dependent multiprotein exon junction complex (EJC) deposited at splice junctions on mRNAs [], and a component of the PSAP complex [].
