abstractText  PURPOSE: A rare finding of fibrae medullares in the mouse eye is presented in an animal suffering from retinal degeneration. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Numerous eyes from different mouse strains were screened for myelinated fibres in the retina. Light and electron microscopy was used to document a single case in a rd mouse. RESULTS: Myelinated fibres were found in the inner retina but not continuous with the optic nerve. CONCLUSION: Even in this highly degenerated retina the potency of the optic nerve fibres to become myelinated still remained. The source of the appropriate glia cells is discussed.
