abstractText  Babesiosis is a common disease of vertebrates caused by infection with intraerythrocytic protozoa of the genus Babesia, generally transmitted by tick bite. Our experimental model employs the WA1 Babesia, a recently described species responsible for a particularly severe infection in humans and mice (reviewed in Homer et al. 2000. Babesiosis. Clin Microbiol Rev 13:451-469). The ability to control infection with this parasite differs dramatically between inbred strains, ranging from a silent and transient infection to a massive parasitemia that results in a fatal outcome. Strains of the C57 lineage are particularly resistant, while C3H, A/J, AKR and Balb/c are susceptible. Resistance is dominant. Here we show data on the mapping of the resistance in a C57BL/6 C3H/HeJ backcross and in RI BxH strains. The data supports a locus near the telomeric region of Chr 16 that contributes to resistance to babesiosis.
