abstractText  Associations between DNA and protein sequences and gene records in the Mouse Genome Informatics database can be established using semi-automated computational methods. Automated sequence to gene associations are based on the quality of the sequence similarity match (percent identity and length of match) between the query sequence and a target transcript sequence (cDNA or mRNA) that is already in the MGI database. Automated associations of EST sequences with existing gene records in MGI require a match of at least 95% identity over greater than 95% of the length of the query sequence. In some cases the query sequence is from a mapped EST or STS marker. If the gene with which the EST is to be associated has no mapping info, the mapping data for the EST or STS is transferred to the gene. Sequence matches that do not meet the criteria described above or where there is a conflict in the mapping assignment of a sequence and the gene it is computationally associated with are manually curated.
