abstractText | To achieve the most comprehensive and accurate representation of mouse genes possible, MGI curators evaluate the association between publicly available nucleotide sequences and genes represented in the MGI database by placing sequence data in the context of the publicly available mouse genome assembly. Sequences associated with genes in MGI are searched against the mouse genome and displayed relative to the alignments for mouse mRNA and EST sequences and gene predictions that are available in the UCSC Genome Browser. When new sequence data are added to MGI, these data are compared to existing data using the Genome Browser to determine if the new sequence represents a novel gene or if it is equivalent to or part of a genomic locus that is already represented in MGI. Displaying curated sequence to gene associations from MGI in the Genome Browser also is a standard part of the quality assurance protocols used by curators to identify incorrect gene to sequence associations, problem sequences, mapping data inconsistency and gene redundancy in the MGI database.
