Located in axon and synapse. Is expressed in several structures, including alimentary system; central nervous system; genitourinary system; respiratory system; and sensory organ. Orthologous to human ALDH1A1 (aldehyde dehydrogenase 1 family member A1). PHENOTYPE: Mice homozygous for a disruption in this gene show a significantly reduced ability to convert retinol to retinoic acid in the liver.
