Mgi Type | protein coding gene |
description | FUNCTION: Automated description from the Alliance of Genome Resources (Release 7.3.0) Enables lysine-acetylated histone binding activity and peptidase activator activity. Involved in DNA repair; proteasomal ubiquitin-independent protein catabolic process; and sperm DNA condensation. Located in cytosol and nucleus. Part of spermatoproteasome complex. Is expressed in craniocervical region bone; nervous system; sensory organ; and submandibular gland primordium. Used to study visceral heterotaxy. Orthologous to human PSME4 (proteasome activator subunit 4). PHENOTYPE: Mice homozygous for a knock-out allele show normal repair of DNA double-strand breaks but exhibit significantly reduced male fertility due to defects in spermatogenesis observed in both meiotic spermatocytes and postmeiotic haploid spermatids.
