abstractText  Full text of MNL contribution: New mutants and linkages. 1. Juvenile bare (jb). This new recessive arose on our B6C3Fe-a/a hybrid stock some time before 1984. The juvenile hair loss starts at 14-15 days of age with a thinning of the rump hairs first, then a total loss of all hair up to the forehead or ear line by 20-21 days of age. The hair is not lost from the head and snout. Regrowth occurs from rump to head and most are fully coated by 35 days of age. The homozygous adult male hair coat appears normal but the homozygous female coat appears rough and unkempt. The jb/jb females also exhibit overgrowth and breakage of incisors and may become thin and ataxic. Both sexes breed. Juvenile bare is located on Chromosome 7. In an RI with pink-eyed dilution (p) 604 mice were raised; 336 + +, 151 p +, 113 + jb, 4 p jb giving an RE of 18.9 +/- 3.9%. In a CI with p 148 mice were raised; 101 + +, 20 p +, 5 + jb, 22 p jb giving an RE of 19.2 +/- 4.5%. The combined estimate is 19.0 +/- 2.9%. In an intercross using the multiple ectropic virus stock (MEV) of Dr. B.A. Taylor a close linkage was found with Emv-11 (formerly Akv-1). From this same cross information was available on the Gpi-1 locus (the jb stock is Gpi-1b, MEV is Gpi-la). In the 46 jb/jb homozygotes tested 10 crossovers occured giving an RE between Gpi-1 and jb of 10.9 +/- 3.3%. Four of the 10 crossovers were tested for Emv-11 and none carried it. This suggests that jb is proximal to Gpi-1 and very close to Emv-11. (Lane, Taylor, Davisson, S. Cook, L. Rowe)
