abstractText | Full text of MNL contribution: Research News: We have observed a variation among inbred strains in the electro-phoretic mobility of the enzyme HPRT in erythrocyte lysates, but not in other tissues. Under our conditions the A/J, DBA/2J, and CBA/J strains have a three band pattern, while the C57BL/6J, SJL/J, and LT/SV strains have a two band pattern (not identical with any two of the three bands of the three band strain). All strains have the two band pattern in tissues other than erythrocytes. A x C57 F1 and C57 x A F1 mice all have 3 bands. Of 39 offspring of Fl animals backcrossed to the A strain, a11 showed 3 bands. Of 47 offspring of a backcross of Fl animals to C57 mice, 23 had 3 bands, and 24 had two bands. These results are consistent with the idea that the strain difference in HPRT mobility is controlled by a single autosomal locus. With the help of B. Taylor of the Jackson Laboratory, we have found this locus to be 1inked to Hbb. All HPRT electrophoresis was done by B. Bakay, Dept. of Medicine, UCSD. We have decided to name this new locus ÒHPRT mobi1ity a1terationÓ (Hma), and suggest the use of the symbol Hma3 for the allele giving the 3 bandpattern, and the symbol Hma2 for the allele giving the 2 band pattern. (Day, Nesbitt) Editor's note: the allelic symbols proposed are non-standard; it is suggested that Hmaa and Hmab are used instead for the dominant 3-band and recessive 2-band alleles. |
