abstractText  Full text of MNL contribution: h. A null activity variant found at the butyryl CoA dehydrogenase (Bcd-1) locus in BALB/cByJ subline. Two alleles a and b at the Bcd-1 locus on Chr 5 determine fast and slow anodally migrating electrophoretic forms of butyryl CoA dehydrogenase enzyme activity (Seeley and Holmes, 1981, Biochem. Genet. 19:333). We found no detectable enzyme activity (by cellulose acetate electrophoresis) of tissue extracts from ten BALB/cByJ mice of both sexes taken from an Animal Resources colony. In contrast, normal amounts of enzyme activity of b phenotype were found in six other BALB/cBy sublines maintained in the research colonies. BALB/cByJ mice were transferred to Animal Resources in 1975 and thus have been separated for over 30 inbred generations from those in research colonies expressing the b allele at normal activity levels (as do BALB/cJ mice, which were separated from ByJ in 1935). The new variant behaves as a recessive in combination with either a or b allele and it segregates in a Mendelian fashion in appropriate crosses. Our preliminary results indicate that it maps to the Bcd-1 locus itself, suggesting that it is allelic with the a and b form. Therefore we propose a provisional designation Bcd-1c for this new allele producing no electrophoretic detectable enzyme activity in BALB/cByJ. (M. Prochazka and Leiter)
