abstractText | Full text of MNL contribution: Dr. R. Holmes from the School of Science, Griffith University, Nathan, Queensland, Australia demonstrated that the BALB/cHeA and STS/A strains are polymorphic for butyryl CoA dehydrogenase, an enzyme coded by the Bcd-1 locus and shown to be linked to a gene Dao-1 (D-amino acid oxidase) (Seeley, T. and R.S. Holmes, Biochem. Genet. 19, 333-345, 1981; Holmes, R.S. Biochem. Genet. 14, 981, 1976). The strain distribution pattern of Bcd-1a(STS) and Bcd-1b(BALB/c) revealed complete concordancy with the marker for retinal degeneration (rd) on chromosome 5. All blind mice (STS phenotype) carry the Bcd-1a phenotype (14/14 concordancies). This implies that Bcd-1 is located on chromosome 5, most likely very close to the rd locus. It also implies that the Dao-1 gene is on 5. The exact location of these genes as compared to rd and Pgm-1 will be studied in an appropriate backcross between the BALB/cHeA and STS/A strains. The rd marker was done by Dr. R. van Nie at this Institute. |
