abstractText | Full text of MNL contribution: Research News. 1. New mutants. a) Bruised (Bru). Found among the offspring of a male treated with 250 mg/kg ethylnitrosourea (ENU). Affected heterozygotes are detected at birth by apparent bruising, sometimes about the head and sometimes around the hind part of the body. In some but not all cases the bruising is accompanied by a pale, anaemic appearance. Viability from birth to weaning is reduced. Survivors develop enlarged eyes (buphthalmos) beginning at about 1 month old. On slit-lamp examination cataracts are present and the iris appears abnormal. Strands of tissue can be seen connecting the iris, lens and cornea. The animals remain rather small and some are sterile. Homozygotes die prenatally as large or small moles. The gene shows no linkage with fz, ln, v, ep, T, Xt, c, wa-1, b, a, s. (Lyon, Glenister and West). |
