abstractText | Research News: Recessive spotting mutation mapped to the Mitfmi locus on Chromosome 6. 1. A new recessive spotting mutation found in the C57BLKS/J-dbm stock in 1994 has been mapped to the Mitfmi locus on Chr 6. Mitfmi-bws, black and white spotting, is recessive to wild type and MitfMi-wh/+. Homozygous Mitfmi-bws/Mitfmi-bws on a nonagouti background have considerable white spotting throughout the coat and pigmented eyes. Both sexes are viable and fertile. MitfMi-wh/Mitfmi-bws mice resemble MitfMi-wh/Mitfmi-sp in color. These heterozygotes are butterscotch in color with dorsal and ventral white spotting and pigmented eyes. Backcross matings of the type MitfMi-wh/Mitfmi-bws x Mitfmi-bws/Mitfmi-bws produced 24 MitfMi-wh/Mitfmi-bws, 28 Mitfmi-bws/Mitfmi-bws and no +/+ progeny (n=52). Mitfmi-bws/Mitfmi mice are white in color with nonpigmented eyes. Eyes appear normal in size; incisors erupt. A direct allelism test between Mitfmi-bws/Mitfmi-bws and Mitfmi-vit/Mitfmi- vit produced 4 progeny. Each had a large white belly spot. The Mitfmi-bws mutation has been placed on the C57BL/6J background. Embryos will be cryopreserved and DNA saved. (H.O. Sweet) |
