Protein Coding Gene : Grik2 glutamate receptor, ionotropic, kainate 2 (beta 2)

Primary Identifier  MGI:95815 Organism  mouse, laboratory
Chromosome  10 NCBI Gene Number  14806
Mgi Type  protein coding gene
description  FUNCTION: Automated description from the Alliance of Genome Resources (Release 8.0.0)

Enables ligand-gated monoatomic ion channel activity. Involved in detection of cold stimulus involved in thermoception. Acts upstream of or within several processes, including behavioral fear response; chemical synaptic transmission; and modulation of chemical synaptic transmission. Located in neuronal cell body; postsynaptic density; and presynaptic membrane. Part of kainate selective glutamate receptor complex. Is active in several cellular components, including hippocampal mossy fiber to CA3 synapse; mossy fiber rosette; and postsynaptic membrane. Is expressed in several structures, including arterial system; central nervous system; eye; gut; and metanephros. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in Huntington's disease and autosomal recessive intellectual developmental disorder 6. Orthologous to human GRIK2 (glutamate ionotropic receptor kainate type subunit 2).
PHENOTYPE: Homozygotes for a targeted null mutation exhibit hippocampal neurons with reduced sensitivity to kainate and reduced susceptibility to the seizure-inducing effects of kainate administration. [provided by MGI curators]
