| description | Protein located in or on the carboxysome, bacterial microcompartments in which ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase (RuBisCO)-mediated CO(2) fixation occurs. The cytoplasmic polyhedral inclusion bodies are surrounded by a thin protein coat. Found in cyanobacteria and some chemoautotrophs, they enhance autotrophic CO(2) fixation in air by increasing the CO(2) concentration around RuBisCO, thus reducing its reaction with O(2), a competing substrate.
