abstractText | Full text of MNL contribution: Research news: 2. Another mutation at the W locus. A spontaneous mutation at the W locus has occurred in a Rb(5.15)3Bnr stock maintained on a C3H/H-101/H genetic background. It closely resembles Ballantyne's spotting and the W mutation described by Searle, Beechey and Palmer (MNL 51:20) in showing extensive white markings on head and body with general lightening of the coat and white belly. Heterozygotes are usually clearly distinguishable from Wv/+ animals. Homozygotes are anaemic black-eyed whites which have not, so far, survived beyond 10 days. Compounds with Wv are also black-eyed whites but although they survive to maturity they are sterile in both sexes. Compounds with Rw, too, are black-eyed whites but with some very limited pigmentation in the ear-skin. They are viable and fully fertile in both sexes. Since the new mutation is more readily classifiable than Wv in the heterozygote it is being retained and has been given the provisional name of extreme dominant spotting (We). (Cattanach). |
