abstractText  Full text of MNL contribution: New Mutation: 1 . Depletion of tail hair in a few mice of the SJL/L strain associated with an uncharacteristic immune response to certain polysaccharide antigens was discovered and brought to our attention by Dr. K. Eichmann, Institute of Genetics, University of Cologne. Subsequent breeding tests indicated that a single recessive gene is associated with hair depletion on tail, feet, genitalia, and around nipples; depletion and abnormal development of whiskers; and tail skin graft rejection. Mutant mice accept tail skin grafts from normal mice, but normal mice reject tail skin grafts from mutant mice over periods up to 12 weeks. There is no difference in the response of mutant and normal mice to sheep red cells. The incidence and latent period of development of the SJL/J Hodgkin's-like lesion is not affected in mutant mice. The mutation is being maintained on an SJL/J background by forced heterozygosis, and, up to January of 1975, 15 generations of cross-intercrossing onto the C57BL/6J background has been achieved. Mutant mice can be recognized at 1 to 2 weeks of age by their abnormal or depleted whiskers and tail hair depletion. Reproduction, growth, and general health of mutant mice appears to be normal. The mutant gene segregates normally in crosses involving a, p, and c, and is not allelic with lt or fr. We hereby suggest the name, tail hair depletion (thd). (E.P. Les and J.B. Roths)
