abstractText | Full text of MNL contribution: Research news: The pathology of the "seal" mutant has been investigated and as a result the new name Òmotor end-plate diseaseÓ (med) has been agreed on. (See also entry under Harwell by A.G. Searle). The first signs of abnormality appear at about 9 days of age, after which there is progressive weakness and wasting of skeletal muscles. Most of the affected mice have died by the 19th day. Microscopic investigations suggest that the primary pathological changes occur in the region of the neuro-muscular junction. Intravital staining with methylene blue, histochemical demonstration of cholinesterase and silver impregnation show that the motor end-plates become progressively more complex and elongated with fine branching of the nerve fibre within the region of the motor terminal. Nerve stimulation experiments indicate a severe disorder of neuromuscular transmission. (Duchen, Strich). |
