abstractText  Changes in levels of thyroid hormones, thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3) and reverse triiodothyronine (R-T3) in the brain were investigated in three types of genetically-determined ataxic mutant mice: weaver, reeler, and Rolling mouse Nagoya (RMN). The cerebellar pathology in each of these types differs. The concentrations of T4, T3, and R-T3 in the cerebellum were significantly higher in the weaver and reeler mice. R-T3 contents in the cerebellum of the weaver and reeler mice were also significantly elevated. The concentrations of T4, T3, and R-T3 in the cerebellum of RMN did not differ from those of controls, while the T4 content in the cerebellum was significantly lower. The possible involvement of thyroid hormone metabolism in the cerebellum of these ataxic mutant mice is discussed.
