abstractText | Full text of MNL contribution: 2. Stee1 Dickie: During the past year Dr. Dickie of this Laboratory encountered in a DBA/2J stock and BDF>1< stock a mutation which in the heterozygous condition gives rise to a slight general dilution of the body hair, Matings of such mice resulted. in the production of offspring which were black-eyed, white, sterile, and anemic, but were viable. Many are now over 240 days of age. Carriers of this condition when mated together produced 176 normals and 46 black-eyed white anemics. When carriers were crossed with W<v>w, no black-eyed whites were observed in the 36 animals produced to date. However, when such carriers were crossed with Sls1 heterozygotes, 4 black-eyed white mice were found among the 14 collected thus far. Inasmuch as this gene discovered by Dr. Dickie appears allelic with Steel and is emidominant with regard to its coat color effect, the symbol Sl<d> is proposed. Since the two mutants have a similar phenotypic expression, and since DBA/2J is one of the parent stocks for the BDF>1< hybrid it is assumed that the mutation occurred in strain DBA/2J. |
