abstractText | Full text of MNL contribution: Research News: The autosomal recessive gene flopsy (fp), earlier reported from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, U.S.A. has been renamed Bronx waltzer (bv). The inner ear in the homozygote has widespread abnormalities. The maculae and the cristae degenerate completely, but in the organ of Corti while the outer hair cells are present and appear to be normal, the inner hair cells either fail to develop or are malformed. Since the animals are very nearly deaf, it would seem that normal hearing is largely dependent on the inner hair cells. (M.S. Deol & S. Glucksohn-Waelsch, Nature, 278, 250-252. 1979). |
