abstractText  Full text of MNL contribution: Research News: New mutants: 2. Congenital hyperkinesia. A male mouse with a bustling behavior pattern was found in a mutant mouse stock, the above mentioned, bearing a dominant gene expressing abnormalities of the axial skeleton. The mouse was crossed with females of the same litter and produced several descendants with the same eccentric character. The abnormal descendants and normal mice from inbred KYF/MsIdr strain were crossed to determine the heredity of this abnormal character. The abnormality did not occur in F1 descendants, but expressed in 61(21.1%) of 289 in F2 descendants from the incross (x2=1.024, P<0.2) and in 128(44.3%) of 289 descendants from backcross experiments (x2=1.668, P<0.1). There is not a statistically significant difference between the frequencies of the hyperkinetic character and the theoretical values in a single autosomal recessive inheritance. Thus the mouse was given the strain name Bus (Bustling) and the gene symbol bus. It was very difficult for the hyperkinetic mothers to care for neonates, although they were able to become pregnant and to deliver. To establish the strain of this mouse, therefore, selective inbreeding was continued with a mating between female heterozygotes and male homozygotes.
