abstractText  Full text of MNL contribution: Research News: 1. Anorexia (anx). A new recessive lethal mutation characterized by a marked reduction in body weight, abnormal behavior including uncoordinated gait, hyperactivity, head and body tremors, and poor appetite arose in the F2 generation of a cross between strain DW/J and an inbred strain derived from the wild strain M. m. poschiavinus by a Swiss stock. Stomach contents are reduced, beginning at about 5 days of age and continue until death at about 22 days at which time the mutants are emaciated and stomach and intestines devoid of food. At this time the affected mice are also hypothermic. Histologic appearance of all organs except brain and liver are normal at 15 days of age. Brains show an abundance of capillaries suggesting hyperemia and livers are devoid of fat and glycogen. From 5 days of age on spleens are reduced i n size and pale in color. Hemoglobin, hematocrits and MCV are normal. Preliminary data indicate that these mutant mice fail to ingest the necessary quantity of food to sustain life and are therefore characterized as anorexic. Anorexia is located on Chr 2 very close to pa. A RI with a gives an RF of 24.7 +/- 6.0% (164 + +, 78 a +, 49 + anx, 2 a anx, total 276). Additional data from a mixed cross with Ra gives an RF of 39.2 +/- 4.3% (159 Ra +, 145 + +, 31 Ra anx, 55 + anx, total 391) and with 1stJ gives an RF of 4.1 +/- 1.9% when corrected for 59% penetrance (145 + 1stJ, 247 + +, 2 anx 1stJ, 112 anx +, total 509). In an RI with pa no pa anx/pa anx was recovered among 581 offspring. In tests of 27 F2 pa + mice none were found to carry anx. This gives an upper 95% confidence limit for recombination between pa and anx of 5.4%. (L.J. Maltais, Lane)
