abstractText  Full text of MNL contribution: New Mutants: Three cataract mutants were found among the F1 offspring of (101xC3H)Fl males which were irradiated with an acute dose of 600 R gamma-rays. All the mutants are autosomal dominant. Their description is based on the macroscopic observation of eyes of living animals with the aid of a slit lamp and also of dissected eyes and lenses. The mutated genes are designated by provisional gene symbols. Allelism tests with previously described cataracts are in progress and linkage tests to localize these genes are planned. 1. Embryonic nucleus cataract (Enc) is visible as a small opacity limited to the central part of the lens. Manifestation of the cataract is bilateral. Penetrance is incomplete. Heterozygotes are fully viable and fertile. Homozygotes die before birth. (J. Kratochvilova) 2. Anterior polar opacity (Apo) is phenotypically similar to an anterior polar cataract already described (MNL 59:38, 1978; J. Hered. 72:302, 1981). The opacity is located at the anterior pole of the lens and frequently attaches to the cornea which becomes opaque. The affected animals often show hyperactive circling behaviour. Penetrance appears to be complete. Heterozygotes are semilethal while homozygotes are lethal. (J. Kratochvilova) 3. Polar cataract and small eyes, (Pcs). The lens opacity at the anterior pole is associated with reduction in size of the whole eye. The eyes of an individual could be affected to different degrees but the cataract is always developed bilaterally. Corneal opacity is frequent. Penetrance is complete. Viability and fertility of heterozygotes is normal. Homozygotes die before birth. (J. Kratochvilova)
