abstractText  Full text of MNL contribution: Research notes: The new dwarf mutant (MNL 23:31) has proved not to be allelic with dw and is therefore named Ames dwarf. In general, the Ames dwarf behaves as a recessive. However, anomalous sex ratios, segregation of a To (tortoiseshell) dwarf male, and evidence of linkage with markers Re and wa-2 indicate that a reciprocal translocation between the X sex chromosome and VII autosome may be involved. No symbol will be proposed for the present. Daily intraperitoneal injections (0.5 mg.) of bovine growth hormone were given to 4 male and 2 female Ames dwarfs starting at ages ranging from 24-54 days. Treatment was continued until the mice appeared nearly normal and growth had ceased (usually after six weeks). By that time the males weighed 22-24 gm: all four subsequently sired litters. The females weighed 18 and 21 gm. but did not reproduce. In comparison, untreated Ames dwarfs usually weigh about 12 gm. at 3 months of age; none has ever reproduced. The response of older dwarf males was checked on two 8 month-old litter mates weighing 16 and 19 gm. After 33 days of treatment, they weighed 22 and 26 gm. respectively; on that day the first litter from the older male was born. The smaller male continued to grow for a longer time and also sired litters. - Schaible & Gowen.
