A recessive mutation in laboratory mice (furnished by Dr. K. Hummel, The Jackson Laboratory), described as eye-blebs (symbol eb), was studied from a histological approach. Clear blisters of fluid appear in the hypodermis of the eyelids and apical areas of the limbs during the 12th and 13th days of intrauterine development. The blisters enlarge and usually become hemorrhagic during the 13th and 14th days of development. The blisters (or blebs) persist during the remainder of the intrauterine period but rupture soon after birth. Sections of tissue across the hemorrhagic blebs show that small vessels have openings into the bleb. No gross disturbances are evident at birth as a consequence of the bleb but postnatal disturbances are most marked. In relationship to the size of the bleb area, the eye-bulb is very small or absent when a large bleb was present or only slightly reduced in size as a result of a small ruptured bleb. A similar pattern attains with the extremities; a foot may be absent or distorted in direct correlation with the extent and location of the bleb. The etiology of bleb formation is being investigated from a histochemical and biochemical approach. |
