abstractText  Full text of MNL contribution: M.M. Dickie. New mutations: 6. Plucked. Three almost hairless animals similar to ichthyosis were observed in a litter of DBA/2J in December 1963. These animals lack fur on the tail, some seem to have very little fur, and others have spots of very short fur. Breeding tests have shown this is a recessive mutation. Tests with ichthyosis and hairless were negative. Although this mutant does not resemble any other mutation of this type crosses are under way with furless and fuzzy. The mutant animals have no fur when littermates produce their first coat at about 5 days, but have a thickened rhinoceros type skin. This thickened, folded skin, gradually loses this appearance and by thirty days the animals have a more normal looking skin with areas of very short fur. Both sexes are fertile and breed equally well. This recessive mutation is called plucked and the suggested symbol is pk.
