| abstractText | Full text of Mouse Genome contribution: Research News: 1. Emb-30: a novel ecotropic MuLV present in NOD/Lt and NON/Lt strains. The genomes of the related nonobese diabetic (NOD/Lt) and nonobese normal (NON/Lt) inbred strains each contain a single copy of an ecotropic MuLV (Emv) provirus. Characterization of the restriction fragment length pattern in NOD/Lt and NON/Lt using an Emv-env specific probe, and linkage of this provirus with Mpmv-18 and Il-3 markers on the proximal part of Chr 11 demonstrated that this is a novel ecotropic proviral element designated Emv-30. This provirus is not present in the NOR/LtDn stock which originated from a NOD subline genetically contaminated by C57BL/KsJ (Mouse Genome 1990, 87:93). C57BL/KsJ strain does not have Emv-30 on Chr 11. Genetic analysis of NOR mice demonstrated C57BL/KsJ origin of the proximal part of Chr 11 (including Il-3) which is consistent with the absence of Emv-30 from the NOR genome. Northern blot analysis of total RNA from spleen and thymus of standard NOD/Lt and NON/Lt mice revealed expression of Emv-30 only in NON/Lt. (M. Prochazka, H.R.
