description | At birth, transgenic mice are viable, normal in size, and do not display any gross physical or behavioral abnormalities. By two months of age, a progressive decrease in muscular strength and weight loss can be noticed. Sensorimotor defects as determined by a variety of behavioral assays are also present. Histological examination reveals atrophy of skeletal muscle tissue, axonal degeneration, and widespread astrogliosis in brain and spinal cord tissue. The microtubule- associated protein tau (Mapt) is found to be hyperphosphorylated. |
molecularNote | These transgenic mice express the human APOE (epsilon 4 isoform; APOE4) gene under the direction of the mouse Thy1 promoter. The APOE gene product is detected in neural cell bodies of the brain and spinal cord. |
