abstractText  Full text of Mouse Genome contribution: Research News: Immunocytoichemical Study on GH Cells in the Anterior Pituitary of TA3 Dwarf Mice. TA3 dwarf mice (dwt) were isolated from Tianjin Albino 3 (TA3) mice by Chen Zhiyuan in 1982. The dwt mice are severely growth retarded (1/2-1/2.5 of normal size) and have small pituitary gland. Little, Snell and Ames dwarf mice have been reported to display growth retardation and a partial or complete absence of growth hormone (GH) cells. For investigating whether there are some developmental defects in the pituitary of the dwt mice, in this study immunocytochemical technique and stereological methods were used. The results showed that the volume in volume (Vv) and number in volume (Nv) of the GH immunoreactive cells of both male and female dwt mice were reduced in values compared with the values found in normal control mice (p<0.01-0.001). The results suggest that the GH cells deficiency causes GH absence and dwarfism in the dwt mice. However, dwarfism in the dwt mice is not analogous to that in any of Little, Snell and Ames dwarf mice. 'l'he GH cells deficiency in the dwt mice is not as serious as in any of the other three dwarf mice. So it is possible that dwt mice may reflect GH receptor defects.
