| abstractText | Full text of MNL contribution: The shapes of mandibles from mice of a group of H-2 congenic strains were compared to that of their C57BL/6By background strain in a search for polymorphic genes that influence morphogenesis. The congenic strain B6.c-H-2<d>/a, which carries the H-2<d> complex in a chromosomal segment introduced from the BALB/cBy strain, was found also to carry a semidominant passenger gene which evokes an elongation of the dorsal edge of the condylar process. Two other H-2<d> congenic strains, B6.C-H-2<d>/b and B6.C-H-2<d>/c, independently derived from the same progenitor strains, do not carry such a gene, whereas the H-2 recombinant strain, B6.C-H-2<B6>, derived from B6.C-H-2<d>/a does. This indicates that the effective gene resides outside of and on the centromeric side of the H-2 complex on Chromosome 17. The allele from BALB/cBy will be designated Mdmg-1<c>, and that from C57BL/6By, Mdmg-1<b>. |
