abstractText  Full text of MNL contribution: Research News: 2. Electrophoretic studies of skeletal muscle pyruvate kinase (EC 2.7.1.40) have shown that in A2G/Lac, BALB/c/Gr, CBA/Cam, C3H/He-mg, C57BL/Gr, C57BL/6J, C57L/Lac, C58, DBA/1, DBA/2, NMRI/Lac, NZW, Simpson, SM/J and SWR/J the pyruvate kinase phenotype has less anodal electrophoretic mobility than that found in IS/Cam. The variant segregates as an autosomal codominant gene. The enzyme from IS/Cam skeletal muscle has 80% activity, lowered heat stability and an altered Km compared to that from C57BL/6J. We designate this locus Pk-2; all inbred strains tested so far except IS/Cam carry the Pk-2a allele, IS/Cam carries the Pk-2b allele. The founding mice of the Peru/Coppock stock have the Pk-2a and Pk-2b alleles and wild caught mice from Skokholm island carry Pk-2a and Pk-2c. The Pk-2c allele determines an enzyme of less anodal electrophoretic mobility than that coded for by the Pk-2a allele. (Nash, Peters and Bulfield (University of Leicester)).
