abstractText  The mouse optic ring 2 (opr2) phenotype was discovered in strain CALB/RkJ (JAX Stock No. 001489) with the optic ring observed at weaning age in all CALB/RkJ mice assessed. Therefore, opr2 is a strain characteristic of CALB/RkJ. This phenotype has a mild variability on the CALB/RkJ background. CALB/Rk was derived from wild mice caught in California and it is a very poor breeder. So, we mated CALB/RkJ mice to C57BL/6J mice and all F1 mice had normal retinas. Then we mated F1 mice together to produce F2 mice and some F2 mice had the optic ring proving the mutation recessive. We made a congenic strain by tracking the optic ring through backcross-intercross to C57BL/6J for 5 cycles of backcrossing. Then siblings were intercrossed to make a homozygous congenic strain B6.CALB-opr2/Boc (JAX Stock No. 036989). The penetrance on the C57BL/6J congenic is more variable than on the CALB/RkJ background. This congenic strain was maintained by sibling mating phenotypically affected mice.
