abstractText  A reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay was developed to distinguish between full-length transcripts and functionally aberrant, truncated transcripts of the proopiomelanocortin (POMC) gene. This assay was applied to RNA obtained from the testes of rats and mice, to Percoll-purified primary mouse Leydig cells, and to various Leydig-derived cell lines. The results indicate a very low level of expression for the full-length transcripts in whole rodent testis, in mouse Leydig cells and in the MA10 cell line. In Leydig cells, the major transcripts of the POMC gene were the shorter, truncated transcripts where the regions corresponding to exons 1 and 2 are missing.
