abstractText  As part of the Mouse Genome Sequence (MGS) project, gene models and other genomic features identified in mouse genomic sequence data are integrated with information in Mouse Genome Informatics (MGI). Computational tools are employed to facilitate manual curation of large insert genomic sequences. MGS curators select groups of evidence that define features of the mouse genome (gene models in particular), and oversee integration of these features with existing MGI data, such as genes, mapping information, orthology information and nomenclature. New MGI markers are created to represent novel mouse genes and other features discovered in the process. When establishing nomenclature for new genes, annotations provided by the sequencing centers, evidence selected by MGS curators, and standard MGI curatorial protocol are considered. Where provided, chromosome of origin information for BAC sequences is integrated into MGI. Novel genes identified from little relevant nomenclature information are assigned temporary standardized nomenclature. Temporary nomenclature, gene models and other biological information will be revised regularly, as these genomic features become better characterized. For more detailed information, please contact MGI at mgi-help@jax.org.
