abstractText  Full text of MNL contribution: Resistance to a natural bacterial pathogen. Resistance to Corynebacterium murium in inbred strains has hitherto been called an "infection immunity" due to latent infection within the organism. However, we have shown it to be inherited, and at two levels. LD50 examination of several strains, and the type of segregation we have obtained from crosses and reciprocal backcrosses between C57BL and Swiss Lynch (probably strain SWR), indicate polygenic inheritance. An analysis of the microbicidal efficiency of the cells of the mononuclear phagocyte system in the same strains suggested a single gene: this was proven on crossing between resistant C57BL and susceptible Swiss, and on raising reciprocal backcross and F2 progenies. There was no linkage with the segregating loci A/a and C/c. The symbol acm (anti-C.murium) is proposed until the exact function of the resistant/susceptible locus is discerned. (R.G. Hirst, Dept. Pathology, and M.E. Wallace).
