abstractText  Full text of MNL contribution: 4. Mapping the Fes proto-oncogene locus. The Fes proto-oncogene has previously been mapped between Gpi-1 and Tam-1 in the proximal part of Chr 7 based on strain distribution patterns obtained in 23 AXB and BXA RI strains (Blatt et al., Mol Cell Biol 4:978-981). We have now typed many RI strains for the same Fes EcoRI RFLP. The results are shown below. (progenitors): (AKR/J), AKXL-5,6,7,8,9,12,17,19,21,29,37,38; Genotype: Fes: A; c: A; Mod-2: A (progenitors): (C57L/J), AKXL-13,14,16,24,25,28; Genotype: Fes: L; c: L; Mod-2: L (progenitors): (SWR/J), SWXL-7,12,14,15,16; Genotype: Fes: S; c: S; Mod-2: S (progenitors): SWXL-4; Genotype: Fes: L; c: L x Mod2: S (progenitors): SWXL-17; Genotype: Fes: S x c: L; Mod-2: L (progenitors): (BALB/cBy), CXBG, CXBI; Genotype: Fes: C; c: C; Mod-2: C (progenitors): (C57BL/6By), CXBD, CXBE, CXBH, CXBJ, CXBK; Genotype: Fes: B; c: B; Mod-2: B (progenitors): (C57BL/6J), BXJ-1,2; Genotype: Fes: B; c: B; Mod-2: B (progenitors): (AKR/J), AKXD-2,6,7,10,13,15,18,21,22,24,26; Genotype: Fes: A; c: A; Mod-2: Ð (progenitors): (DBA/2J), AKXD-3,8,11,12,14,17,20,17?,28; Genotype: Fes: D; c: D; Mod-2: - (progenitors): AKXD-1; Genotype: Fes: A x c: D; Mod-2: - (progenitors): AKXD-9,23,25; Genotype: Fes: D x c: A; Mod-2: - (progenitors): (C57L/J), LXPL-1,4,6; Genotype: Fes: L; c: L; Mod-2: - (progenitors): (PL/J), LXPL-2; Genotype: Fes: P; c: P; Mod-2: - Only five Fes - c recombinants were observed among 63 RI strains, for an estimated map distance of 2.3 +/- 1.1 cM. The apparent gene order is Fes - c - Mod-2. No linkage was observed between Fes and Gpi-1. Close linkage between Fes and c was confirmed by typing several c-region congenic strains for the Fes RFLP. The placement of Fes near c simplifies the human-mouse homology map. Fes should be a useful marker for the analysis of c-region deletions. It is unclear why the AXB and BXA RI data led to an erroneous localization. (Taylor and L. Rowe)
