abstractText | Full text of MNL contribution: Research news: Urinary pepsinogen: a new locus Upg-1 linked to the H-2 complex on chromosome 17. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of mouse urine followed by detection of proteolytic activity according to Taggart et al. (in Electrophoresis '78, N. Castimpoolas ed., Elsevier North Holland, Inc., 1978) revealed interstrain differences in mobilities of the most anodal pepsinogens. Two mobility classes were observed, slow (S) and fast (F), which corresponded to bands resolved from stomach homogenates. Both parental forms were expressed in FI progeny, and in backcrosses S and F electrophoretical variants behaved as simple Mendelian units. We propose the symbol urinary pepsinogen-1 or Upg-1 for the gene responsible for this variation. We have analysed a total of 151 backcross progeny from crosses: (C57BL/l0Sn x DBA/2J)Fl x Bl0.CAA2, (A.TL x DBA/lJ) F1 x Bl0.LIB55, (A.TL x DBA/lJ)F1 x BI0.STC90, and found that the locus for this polymorphic enzyme resides on chromosome 17, about 6 map units apart from the H-2 complex. We have tested a total of 146 inbred, H-2 congenic and H-2 mutant strains of mice. The distribution of UPG-IS and UPG-IF variants among these is as follows: Inbred strains: UPG-1S: AU/SsJ, C57BL/6Kh, C57BL/10Sn, C57BR/cdJ, C57L/J, C58/J, DBA/1J, FS/Ei, HRS/J, KE, KP, LPa, MA/MyJ, PRO/Re, RF/J, RIIIS/J, SF/Cam, SJL/J, SK/CamEi, ST/bJ, SWR/J, 129/J, 129/Sv, M.m.castaneus.
