abstractText  Full text of MNL contribution: 2. MUP pseudogenes. The multigene family of the BALB/c mouse major urinary proteins (MUPs) is comprised mainly of two homogeneous groups of genes (Group 1 and Group 2 genes), each with about 15 members, which are tightly clustered on chromosome 4. The unit of the MUP gene cluster (~750kb) is a 45kb region which contains in divergent linkage a Group 1 gene and a Group 2 gene. Sequence analysis of a number of Group 1 and Group 2 genes has shown the Group 2 genes to be pseudogenes which share a common lesion. The presence of this common lesion suggests that most if not all the Group 2 genes are pseudogenes. Truncated MUP pseudogenes have been described (Gene 18, 1982: 221 and EMBO J. 3, 1984: 2055). One of these, a Group 1 pseudogene, is convergently linked to a MUP gene which belongs to neither major group of the family. Partial sequence analysis of this gene demonstrates a lesion distinct from that of the Group 2 genes. Hence, these two linked pseudoqenes have an arrangement different from the basic unit of the MUP gene cluster. Thus, of the estimated total of 35 members of the MUP family only about half are functional. The majority of these functional members belong to the Group 1 genes. (Ghazal, Clark and J. Bishop)
