Ren-1, a gene that encodes thermostable Renin-1 is carried in common by inbred laboratory strains of mice and expressed at low levels in the submandibular gland (SMG) of these animals. Some strains also carry a second renin structural gene, Ren-2, that encodes thermolabile Renin-2 and is expressed at high levels in the SMG. We have typed 36 inbred strains maintained by Dr. J. Hilgers at the Netherlands Cancer Institute for SMG renin activity and thermolability. The following strains have low levels of thermostable SMG renin and are classified as Ren-2n to indicate a null allele at this locus: A2G/GA, BALB/cCdA, BALB/cCrglA, BALB/cHeA, BALB/cByA, BIMA/A, C57BL/LiA, C57BL/6ByA, C57BL/10ScSnA, C57BL/ImrHeA, CBA/BrA, C3H/HeA, C3H/HeAf, and C3H/HeDiSnA. The following strains produce high levels of SMG renin that is indistinguishable on the basis of thermolability from Renin-2 produced by the type strain SWR/J. These are classified as Ren-2s: ACR/A, AKR/FuRdA, BIR/A, DBA/LiA, DBA/LiAf, DD/HeAf, FVB/NA, GRS/A, GRS-Mtv-2/A, LIS/A, MAS/A, NFS/NA, OIR/A, 020/A, RIII/SeA, RIII/SeAf, SJL/JA, STS/A, TSI/A, WLL/BrA, WLL/BrAf, 129SvSlA. |
