| abstractText | Full text of MNL contribution: Mapping of the gene controlling susceptibility to cutaneous leishmaniasis. In collaboration with Benjamin A. Taylor of the Jackson Laboratories we have begun mapping the gene controlling susceptibility to cutaneous leishmaniasis (Leishmania major; Howard et al, Parasite Immunol. 2:303-314, 1980; De Tolla et al, Immunogenetics 14: 29-39, 1981) for which we now propose the name Sc1. Of 6 CXB RI strains examined only CXBH carries the BALB/c progenitor strain susceptible allele. Variation in the rate of recovery in the remaining 5 CXB strains indicates that background genes may modify the course of infection in strains bearing the resistant allele, although the lesions of all these strains eventually healed. For 7 SWXL RI strains examined a clearcut separation into susceptible (SWXL-12 & 17) and resistant (SWXL-4,7,14,15,16) strains was observed. The data for both sets of RI strains are consistent with the gene mapping to chromosome 8. Formal linkage analyses currently in progress are designed to pinpoint the position of the gene more precisely. (Jennefer M. Blackwell, James Howard, F.Y. Liew and Christine Hale). |
