abstractText  Full text of MNL contribution: The zinc binding finger is a common motif in sequence specific DNA-binding proteins being present in several trans-acting factors which regulate transcription (for example TFIIIA and SP1). This motif is also present in proteins implicated in the control of some developmental processes (for example the Drosophila Kruppel and hunchback genes and the putative testis determining factor of mammals). We and others have taken advantage of the partial conservation of the finger domain of the Drosophila Kruppel gene to isolate clones coding for mouse finger proteins. These sequences are expressed during embryogenesis and have distinct patterns of expression in the adult mouse. We have determined the chromosomal location of two members of this family which we have named the Fnp genes (see Mouse News Letter 80, 34, 1988). Experiments are underway to determine the function of these genes.
