| abstractText | Full text of MNL contribution: Research News: Location of Hq. We can confirm our previous note (MNL 47:28) and Cattanach's report (MNL 49:29) that Hq is near Bn. Females heterozygous for Hq, Ta, and Br (Mobr) were mated to +++ males. There were two types of female: (a) Hq++/+Ta Br and (2) Hq Ta Br/+++, with 229 progeny classified from (a) and 161 from (2). In (1) and (2) together there were 69 exchanges of Hq, 2 of Ta and 20 of Br, which conclusively puts Ta in the middle. The recombination frequencies, % +/- se, were as follows (mean = unweighted mean of (1) and (2)): Segment: Hq - Ta; (1): 22.3 +/- 2.8; (2): 18.6 +/- 3.1; mean: 20.5 +/- 2.1. Segment: Ta - Br; (1): 6.1 +/- 1.6; (2): 5.0 +/- 1.7; mean: 5.5 + 1.2. Segment: Hq - Br; (1): 27.5 +/- 3.0; (2): 22.4 +/- 3.3; mean: 24.9 +/- 2.2. If the Bn - Ta distance is 11% (BLM), Hq should on these results be about 10% beyond Bn. Not all the single-factor segregations were good, particularly in (2), but there was no evidence of reduced viability of Hq males. (Isaacson, Jacqueline Stewart, Falconer) |
