abstractText  Full text of Mouse Genome contribution: New Reciprocal Translocations: During a project to produce segmental trisomy for distal Chromosome (Chr) 16 of the mouse, we have induced nearly 250 reciprocal translocations. Nineteen of these either have been preserved in the Frozen Embryo Repository or are maintained as breeding stock at The Jackson Laboratory. Most translocations were induced by irradiating the gonads of DBA/2J (D2) male mice with gamma radiation from a cesium source, mating irradiated males immediately to C57BL/6J (B6) females, and screening B6D2Fl progeny cytologically for chromosome aberrations. Mitotic chromosomes were prepared from F l females using peripheral lymphocyte culture. Males were screened initially by making air dried meiotic preparations after unilateral castration. Peripheral lymphocyte cultures were prepared from males with translocations to identify the chromosomes involved. The translocations that have been saved are listed in the Table with information on their origin and strain background. All translocations are heterozygous unless otherwise indicated. Small translocation chromosomes that can potentially produce segmental trisomy are indicated; T53Dn, T65Dn, and T232Dn have been proved to produce viable mice with segmental trisomy. The table also lists five translocations produced by similar experiments carried out in collaboration with Dr. T.H. Roderick (Rk) at The Jackson Laboratory. (Davisson, C. Schmidt, E.C. Except for T4Dn, all the Dn translocation stocks have been put into the Frozen Embryo Repository by mating T/+ males with C57BL/6J females. Recovered embryos must be typed to see if they are heterozygous or normal. a TEM = triethylenemelamine. # Small marker translocation chromosomes are designated as follows: the first number is the chromosome whose centromere and proximal segment are in the small marker; the superscript is the chromosome whose distal segment and telomere are in the small marker. + B6C3H = (C57BL/6J female x C3H/HeSnJ male)F1. B6D2F1= (C57BL/6J female x DBA/2J ma1e)Fl. @ STOCK = brother x sister on own background, derived from B6 and D2 genetic backgrounds.
