abstractText  The Mouse Genome Informatics (MGI) curation of mouse genetic and genomic data includes the assignment of orthologs between the laboratory mouse and other mammalian species with particular attention to the relationship between mouse, human and rat genes. MGI homology criteria are based on the assays outlined at the HUGO International Workshop on Comparative Genome Organization held on Fraser Island, Australia on December 2-6, 1995 (http://www.informatics.jax.org/reference/J:58000). For homology assessments to be made, curators look primarily, but not exclusively, for combinations of DNA sequence conservation (identity, mapping position, etc.), protein conservation (structure, function, subcellular localization, etc.) and relevant publications of comparative assays and data. Particular care is exercised in making homology assignments between genes identified as members of large gene families or within specific chromosomal clusters. For more detailed information, please contact MGI at mgi-help@jax.org.
