abstractText  Full text of Mouse Genome contribution: LINKAGE DATA: The gene for spinal muscular atrophy of the mouse, wobbler (wr) is linked to Hba on Chr 11. K. Kaupmann, D. Simon-Chazottes, J.-L. Guenet & H. Jockusch. We have reported, on the basis of the interspecific backcross (BC) (C57BL/6J wr/+ x Mus spretus +/+) wr/+ x C57BL/6J wr/+, extensive exclusion mapping of the wr gene (Kaupmann & Jockusch, 1990, Mouse Genome 87, p. 71; J. Neurol Sci 98, (Suppl) p. 52). In the meantime, we have tested a total of 50 markers, covering > 90% of the autosomal genome in the +/- 20 cM range around each marker. Using a probe for the alpha-1 globin gene (alpha-ad1, kindly provided by Dr. P. Leder, Boston) and a PvuII polymorphism, we found among 44 BC individuals with a wobbler phenotype (wr/wr) only 4 carrying the Hba. Of 16 wildtype individuals (+/wr?) from the same BC, 10 were positive for the spretus fragment. We suggest the gene order on Chr 11: Cen - wr - Hba - Il-3 because it is compatible with the data without assuming double recombinations.
