Turleau, C. Cochet, and J. de Grouchy U. 173 INSERM - ER. 149 CNRS, Hopital Necker-Enfants Malades 149, rue de Sevres, 75743 Paris Cedex 15 The following species were mapped by somatic cell hybridization: - baboon, Papio papio (PPA) (Cercopithecidae, Catarrhini);- gibbon, Hylobates concolor (HCO) (Hylobatidae, Catarrhini); - cebus, Cebus capucinus (CCA) (Cebidae, Platyrrhini) which is considered as having the closest karyotype to that of the common ancestor of Simians; - microcebus, Microcebus murinus (MIM) (Lemur, Prosimii) which is considered as having the closest karyotype to that of the common ancestor of all primates. Fifteen assignments in the baboon confirm part of the homologies suggested by chromosome banding. The homolog of HSA6 in this species is different from that suggested in the rhesus monkey by Estop et al. (HGM 5, 1979). In the gibbon, no cbromsome homology has been previously shown by banding techniques. Nineteen gene assignments reveal synteny disruptions and rearrangements, when compared to syntenies known in man and other primates, thus confirming that numerous inter-chromosomal rearrangements have occured in this phylum. Six syntenies are present in man and in the gibbon: ENO1-PGD, PGM1-GUK, NP-CKBB, MPI-PKM2-HEXA, ACO1-AKl, and LDHA-ACP2. Six new assignments were obtained in the cebus, four of which confirm homologies already suggested (HGM 6, 1981). Mapping of GUSB (HSA7) and PGP (HSA16) to CCA1 is inconsistent with the suggested homology of CCA1 and HSA5. Seven new genes were localized in the microcebus. GPX on MIMl supports the homology of this chromosome with HSA3p.
